James Buchanan Duke created Duke University to memorialize his late father in the 1920s. Duke University named its athletics teams the Blue Devils after French soldiers.

In the NCAA, the Duke Blue Devils are one of the top teams in the ACC, with several NCAA tournament wins and more than 20 ACC championships. The Blue Devils have made it to 15 Final Fours throughout their existence.

Mike Krzyzewski, or Coach K as he’s affectionately known, is one of Duke’s most well-known basketball coaches. He announced his retirement a few months after Coach Roy Williams of UNC, his legendary rival, retired earlier in the year. As coach, Mike Krzyzewski led the Blue Devils to five national championships over 41 seasons and won over 1,000 games. He also led the team to 12 Final Fours.

Over his career, he developed NBA stars like Kyrie Irving and Brandon Ingram. He chose Jon Scheyer, a former Blue Devils athlete, as the next head coach for the team in their 2022-2023 season. Krzyzewski was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame alongside household names like Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.

Dick Groat was one of the Blue Devils' all-time players, earning honors in the 1950s. He set the NCAA record for most points scored in a single season. He was also one of the only athletes back then to make strides in baseball. During his Blue Devils career, he earned the UPI’s National Player of the Year award.

Jason Williams was a point guard with the Blue Devils until the 2000s. He earned the National Player of the Year award from NABC. He trended six assists, 19 points, and nearly four rebounds per game.

Johnny Dawkins was one of the top players in the 1980s. He was a two-time All-American athlete and a top scorer with more than 2,000 points scored in his career. In his last year with the Blue Devils, he was named the Naismith College Player of the Year.

Grayson Allen almost became a 2,000-point scorer, finishing in 2018 with four points shy. Grayson was one of the best Blue Devils basketball athletes in the last decade, earning All-American honors.

Grant Hill was a Blue Devils forward between 1990 and 1994. He led Duke to two NCAA titles and a third appearance in the championship game. He earned several awards, including a selection as a consensus All-American.
