Who Are the USC Trojans?
The USC Trojans were first formed in 1888 and have since established themselves as one of the top college football programs in the NCAA. They have produced a number of athletes who went on to become Heisman Trophy winners, play in the NFL, or both.
The Trojans have won plenty of conference championships as well as national titles, which we’ll explore more later. The team only started being known as “The Trojans” in 1912. Prior to then, they were called the Methodists.
The Trojans play as part of the Pac-12 Conference, meaning that season ticket holders can expect to see games with teams like the Oregon Ducks football team, the Washington Huskies, the Colorado Buffaloes, and more.
Coaches and Top Players
Over the years, a number of phenomenal players and coaches alike have called USC their home. Seven athletes from the school have won Heisman Trophies, including:
- Mike Garrett
- Charles White
- Marcus Allen
- Carson Palmer
- Matt Leinart
- Caleb Williams
Meanwhile, some of the best coaches in Trojan history include John McKay, Howard Jones, and Pete Carroll.
USC Trojans Conference Titles
The Trojans have amassed 39 conference championships during their time in Pac-10 and Pac-12. Fans can’t wait to see how they’ll fare when they switch over to the Big 10 in 2024.
USC Football National Championship Wins
USC has won an impressive 11 National Championships since its start in 1888.
USC Top Rivals
From the Arizona Wildcats to the San Jose State Spartans, the Trojans have multiple rivalries that keep fans engaged year after year. While they range from teams that are a few hours away to teams that are practically right in USC’s backyard, each rivalry offers something unique.
UCLA Bruins vs. USC Trojans
Rivalries between teams are intense enough when they share a division or even a state, but the UCLA Bruins and the Trojans take this to another level. These football teams each call Los Angeles their home, so games between the two are especially heated.
These schools are each part of the Pac-12 Conference alongside teams like the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Utah Utes but not for long. Starting in 2024, both teams will make their way to the Big Ten instead. Since they’re moving at the same time, this rivalry will go uninterrupted.
Each year, UCLA and USC face off in the Crosstown Cup in pursuit of the win and the coveted Victory Bell. USC tends to put focus its athletic energy on football, whereas UCLA also has robust programs for sports like baseball, women’svolleyball, and basketball.
However, many fans agree that their football rivalry is the most exciting of all.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. USC Trojans
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish might not play in a several-mile radius of the Trojans (in fact, they play at Notre Dame Stadium in Indiana). However, the two teams still have an impassioned rivalry that spans nearly a century.
This particular rivalry kicked off in 1926 and has been going strong ever since. Notre Dame won their first game matchup and has largely kept up that momentum over the years.
These teams have played 93 games total since the start of the rivalry. Over that time, Notre Dame has 47 wins, USC has 36, and they’ve tied five times. That’s right — these teams’ history goes back so far that they were playing each other when ties still existed in college football.
In the 2021-2022 season, USC managed to beat Notre Dame 38-27. The two will meet up again this year to see if USC can keep up their streak or if Notre Dame will take back the victory.
Stanford Cardinal vs. USC Trojans
Ever since facing off for the first time in 1905, this has been a rivalry for the books. As two members of the Pac-12 Conference, the Stanford Cardinal and the USC Trojans have played almost every single year since 1919.
With a record of 64 wins for USC, 34 wins for Stanford, and three ties, it’s true that USC usually wins their matches. We think that just makes the possibility of an upset even more riveting.
Not only that, but these two teams are especially passionate about their distaste for each other. As a result, games between them are always exciting to watch.
Where Do the USC Trojans Play?
Nestled in Southern Los Angeles in a neighborhood known as Exposition Park, you will find an enormous stadium teeming with screaming, ardent fans. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum— or just “the Coliseum,” depending on who you ask — plays a significant role in the history of both USC and Los Angeles as a city.
It was built as a memorial to those who had fought in World War I. Building finished on the Coliseum in 1923, and the Trojans have played football there ever since. The Los Angeles Rams also used to play at the Coliseum before moving to Anaheim Stadium (now Angel Stadium of Anaheim) and eventually landing at SoFi Stadium.
The LA Coliseum has seen two separate Olympic games, in both 1932 and 1984. In 2028, the stadium will soon take part in yet another round of the Summer Olympics.
Home games played at the Coliseum can seat up to 77,500 fans. Meanwhile, the nearby Rose Bowl seats 89,702, and UC Berkeley's California Memorial Stadium (home to the California Golden Bears) seats 63,000.
The Memorial Coliseum often hosts other live events as well. Many famous concerts have been played there over the years, securing the LA. Coliseum as a historic monument as well as a hub for NCAA football fans.
